A chimney is a structure that ventilates hot gases or smoke from a boiler, stove, furnace, or fireplace to the outside atmosphere. Chimneys are usually made of masonry, clay, or metal. They operate based on the principle that hot air is less dense than cold air, and thus rises. Chimneys isolate hot toxic exhaust gases or smoke from human living areas. They also induce and maintain a draft that provides air to the fire. Chimneys are usually vertical, or almost vertical, to make sure that the gases flow easily. The hot, rising gas creates a pressure difference known as a draft which pulls combustion gases out of the building.
